The Trendsetter: Anceztaz Clothing Company

Bringing Meaning to Our Clothing

When it comes to fashion, people tend to wear various labels just because a celebrity was spotted with it or because a logo looks cool, but no one stops to think about why the particular clothing line was created. Does the label have any significance outside of making a product that is most popular to the people just to make a profit? Does any of our clothing actually have meaning? The new up and coming line “Anceztaz” is proving to the fashion world that it does.

Hampton, Virginia native Tanzania Bridgett created Anceztaz Clothing Line pronounced, “ancestors.” The clothing was created to provide people of all races, sex, and creed with fashionable clothing as well as informative, meaningful messages and history about oneself. The line consists of t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and hoodies. To date the logo is the backbone of the garments with a combination of the letters in the word “Anceztaz.” Although the logo appears on most of the clothing, the line is about to be taken to another level. The various clothing will soon have pictures of the ancestors from different backgrounds also included will be a message or quote from that particular figure. Bridgett plans to go by the calendar on which ancestor she will feature next. For example, come Saint Patrick’s Day in the month of March, Anzceztaz Clothing Line will release clothing with an ancestor from Irish decent. A unique factor to the clothing line is the establishment date. As we see in many other lines they have the “Est.” and the particular year it was created. Anceztaz’s was established B.C- A.D (before Christ and Anno Domini). The establishment is B.C- A.D instead of 09’, when the clothing line was actually created is because it is said to cover a time frame of eternity and the ancestors will always exist throughout eternity.

Bridgett originally came up with the concept of her clothing line while still in high school, but officially released the line in July 2009 while attending Howard University in Washington, DC. The sole purpose of her line is to educate any and everyone on their different cultural backgrounds while dressing them in stylish threads. “Unfortunately, many people do not know much about their culture,” says Bridgett. Therefore, this is my opportunity to inform while incorporating my love for fashion too.”

Of course with the purpose of the clothing being so detailed and intense, it requires a lot of research and studying on Tanzania Bridgett and the “Anceztaz” team’s part. Each person must sit down and actually teach themselves about the various cultures they want to incorporate into the line. So not only is the fashion team creating designs, but they are putting in the time and effort to really educate themselves about their pieces so they can then educate their customers.

Anceztaz Clothing Line can be viewed on the websites and then a personal order can be placed by Tanzania herself. She expects to expand the line as early as 2010 by incorporating different elements of clothing such as polos’, cardigans, sweaters, and jeans for both men and women. Bridgett plans with the coming years to have her own stores in 5 major cities including her hometown of Hampton where it all started.

Anceztaz is on the verge of breaking into the fashion industry but more importantly is on their path to educating people about their history. Its time that we understand exactly why we do the things that we do. Whether it is the music we listen to or the clothes that we wear. Informing ourselves on the items that we put our precious dollars into is just as essential as the latest musthaves for the winter season.

Anceztaz’s mission is “to pay homage to the spiritual threads sewn into the fabric of our existence.” For more information on Anceztaz Clothing Company, visit anceztaz.blogspot.com or anceztazclothing.tumblr.com.

THE TRENDSETTER: TONY SHELLMEN+PARISH

Tony Shellman: The Trendsetter of Hip Hop Fashion
Don’t ask him to define it. Just know that he does it all. Some call Tony Shellman a fashion innovator and designer, while others call him an entrepreneur and the trendsetter of hip-hop. I simply call him a genius. Even if you never heard of Shellman, chances are you most likely wore his clothing at one point. With Shellman being the Co-Founder of popular urban clothing brands such as Mecca and ENYCE, it’s only logical that he would start another huge clothing brand called Parish Nation. Parish Nation was formed when former executives of ENYCE clothing, Tony Shellman, Chaka Wilson, Evan Davis and Periclese Papayannis came together in 2006 to launch the clothing brand. Parish Clothing is a men’s wear line. It’s bold colors, detailed designs and retro 80’s hip hop trends is what makes the brand of Parish stand out in the competitive world of fashion.

The Parish mission to bring a vision of “health, wealth and wisdom” is shown when looking at how they reach out to the community. As a spokesperson for National Foster Care Month, Shellman continues to serve as an advocate for youth. Shellman and the rest of the Parish team have visited high schools in the community and set to provide career development, job skills and mentoring for youth. At the end of the day he wants children everywhere to know that they do matter.

Shellman, growing up in Seattle Washington, was adopted by Lenzie and Betty Shellman at the age of two. He got his start working in the fashion industry while working for Pete Nordstrom in a Seattle Nordstrom store. He later worked in the Zebra Club store and became number one in sales before heading a fashion store in Westlake Mall. Shellman pursued a modeling career before moving to New York to study fashion at Parson’s School of Design. Shellman later started Mecca, a street wear label in the 1990’s. Liz Claiborne, Inc. purchased ENYCE clothing for $114 million in 2005. According to nytimes.com Parish Nation makes on average $8 million in sales a year.

Shellman has worked with everyone in the rap game from R. Kelly to Sean Combs and he was interviewed on the Keith Tucker show in a feature called Hip Hop Beyond Rap-The 7th element of hip hop “street wear”. His brands Mecca and ENYCE paved the way for other street wear lines such as Sean John and Roca Wear. With Shellman having about two decades in the game the future of street wear will only continue to progress. Being an entrepreneur, designer, fashion innovator and trendsetter, Shellman continues to bring a vision of “health, wealth and wisdom”.
