Robert “Bob” Johnson, The BET Network and The Urban Influence
As Lewis Douglas, 21, a senior at Trinity University in DC watches a re-run of Friday’s 106th and Park he says, “BET has become a cornerstone in the urban community, the same type of stuff you see on TV is the same type of stuff you see on the street, the styles of both men are women are built on the images from BET.”
Students, professionals, and children alike have experienced the visual stimulation of the BET network or seen the inspirational achievements of Bob Johnson. We as an urban community have formulated opinions good or bad, felt inspired or even been completely appalled by Bob Johnson and/or the BET network.
No matter how each individual may feel about BET and Bob Johnson they both have made an unforgettable impact, especially in the urban communities.
To put it simply, Robert “Bob” Johnson, 63, is the epitome of the successful and fearless black man. His successes include him being the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), being the majority owner of a NBA franchise the Charlotte Bobcats along with rapper Nelly and former NBA star Michael Jordan. Johnson was also the first black billionaire and first black person to be listed on the Forbes List in 2001.
Although, BET is not the perfect image and role model there are more than several positive programs that may influence the urban community in a positive way. Among the video vixens and the money and sex filled lifestyles that rap artists portray, the urban community is given important news, information about HIV/AIDS, panel discussions with educated black men and women about serious topics and inspirational gospel shows on Sunday mornings.
The Urban community also sees one of the most popular BET shows, “106th and Park,” and is able to see two real hosts Terrance and Rocsi. The show includes talent various showcases, Twitter question and answer sessions as well as positive feedback and news for the viewers and attendees.
Bob Johnson seems to have built an empire that influences people of all ages. The urban community in a way depends on BET to fulfill the need for entertainment but also for inspiration no matter the type. BET is a part of everyone’s family in the urban setting and the importance of both Bob Johnson and the BET network is larger than something anyone could have imagined.
