THE FEATURE: HIGH HEEL LOVE

Posted by urbanfeed On March - 29 - 2010

FASHION WRITER ISOKE DAVIS, GIVES AN EDITORIAL ABOUT THE NEW PHASE OF THE KITTEN HEEL!

ChristianLouboutin.ADRussoYesterday, I cried. Long sobs of denial and rebellion rang through my body as I read that the platform had died. The reign of the six-inch sky highs had finally ended, and in its place, a shorter stubbier shoe would rule supreme. At a time when things are so shaky, isn’t it better to keep your feet firmly planted to the ground? Girls everywhere are falling for the practicality of a low heel or none existent heel. Who wouldn’t love the run from class to your internship or job without the inconvenience of hailing a cab or discreetly slipping your heel out on the metro ride? And, if you’re someone’s grandma you can run right to pick up your new tan orthopedics and Dr.Schouls in-soles from the nearest Wal-Greens.

Girls please! If the sky is the limit wouldn’t six inches up provide great morale to keep on reaching? Ready to wear for Spring 2010 brought us low heeled sandals paired with socks, one-inch kitten heels, and leveled straw wedges. I’ve never been more depressed. Seriously, have you seen what a good six inches can do for the leg? Higher heels give the impression of height, and the impression of height takes away at most two or three pounds. And as the runway trickles down to the department stores and malls of mass production, five foot three, one hundred and thirty five pound girls will soon forget also, in effort of keeping up with the trends. I urge them and scream from this keyboard, “Remember!” “Please, please remember what they did for you!”
There is not a single reshaper as useful and multifaceted as the six-inch plat form. Apparently this struggle of power has been going on forever. In fact, in June 2009 Andre Leon Talley challenged designers “to stop the madness and dream up a new way to define your silhouette!” And designers followed suite. Note the aforementioned runway looks. When Andre calls, one takes heed.

However, understand that it’s about being impeccably dressed at the right moment, in the right place, and in what makes YOU look your best. Girls with needle thiProxy-Connection: keep-alive

legs should absolutely strap those kitten heels as a boy would strap on the coveted Air Forces and jump! Jump for the sky and trust that you will land with your feet firmly planted on the ground. After all you were only one inch off it to begin with. For the rest of us, go for that hidden platform and you keep those six inches; you’re almost touching the sky

THE FEATURE: NYFW RECAP

Posted by urbanfeed On March - 8 - 2010

It is Fashion Week Time! As the fashion world has just concluded a number of fashion week events in the cities, such as DC, Paris, Milan, and of course New York City, there is much anticipation for the up and coming fashion weeks that will soon take place in the fall, but until then lets’ take a look back and recap what the latest was at New York City Fashion 2010:

At New York Fashion Week 2010 there were nearly 150 designers present. Beginning on Thursday February 11, and ending a week later, designers such as L.A.M.B Charlotte Ronson, Alexander Wang, Tracy Reese, Badgley Mischka, Jeremy Scott, and Ralph Lauren all took part in this annual event.
Each designer displayed his or her own creative ideals within their design. Designers such as Naeem Kahn, L.A.M.B, Brian Reyes, William Rast, Badgley Mischka, and John Barlett are just a miniscule representation of the designers during fashion week. Naeem Kahn’s designs were tribal with earth toned colored fabric, with various types of beads, sequin’s, and stones. William Rast’s designed were somewhat of an ode to hippy attire. Rast’s fall collection consisted of leather vests, cargo pants and jackets, as well as sweatshirts, with beaded headbands.

On the other hand, Brian Reese’s collection was more formal, including silk skirts, accentuated with ruffles. Also, knee length, form fitted dresses, with coordinating slacks and jackets. Reese also included fur boas and gloves, and silk crop tops with shorts, to name a few pieces. Badgley Mischka is also a formal designer, who can be known for the continual one-piece designs, whether it a knee length dress, a full-length gown, or a blouse with silk pants attached.
Designers L.A.M.B. and John Barlett both took a casual and modern approach to their designs this season. L.A.M.B. included herum pants, collared blouses, blazers and various types of crop tops. John Barlett’s season included blazers with tweed and pinstriped slacks, but with turtlenecks, bowties, and wool cable knit scarves.

Take a look at some of the styles that ripped the runway this season at NYFW 2010:

FASHION 101: TRENDS FOR 2010

Posted by urbanfeed On January - 23 - 2010

fash13 In the awakening of the New Year, we’re faced with the coming of the dawn. There is nothing more exciting than the freshness of the morning after, the sun sliding slowly back into its place, signaling the start of the New Year. And what I love most about those glorious New Year’s Eve turned mornings are the chances in which we get to reinvent ourselves, and start something new. And what better time is there to discard the trends of fall and embrace the coming of spring, and more importantly, the freshness of the 2010 spring lines? Designers go above and beyond in presenting their spring collections. It seems as if their fantasies leap from their imaginations and sketch books onto the runways in the fabulous forms of chiffon daisies, prints, and utilitarian khakis and trenches. Below are some of the hottest trends of 2010. Keep what works for you, and pass along what doesn’t to a friend, who’s still in last season’s knits.

1. Colorful floral prints- Large or small this ode to Mother Nature debuts every spring bigger and better than the year before. They offer a great alternative to lace, which works for spring but is best left in winter. The best of 2010’s florals are three dimensional, which makes them even harder to resist.

2. Ethnic prints and accessories- Traditional African, South American, and Native American prints made their big debut in Spring 2008 but have come back more fierce than ever. What makes these prints work so well in the New Year is their versatility. Pair an Ikat printed skirt with a tie dyed shirt to get a polished but fun look. Be one of a kind in traditional cultural accessories. Think the necklace your mother brought back from her trip to the Ivory Coast. More than likely the metal or stones are real and you’re the only who has it.

3. Utilitarian cuts and pieces- if you’re not into the femininity of florals or the adventurous risk of the tribal prints, the utilitarian way is definitely for you. Picture denim dresses or skirts, and khaki blazers. You can make them it interesting and keep it feminine with rope belts and floral or lace touches.

4. Themed jewelry- Like winter, art deco and architecture reminisces are left behind, and simple animal or flower charms are not enough right now. Go the long mile and wear the whole garden. Fish out the entire sea when doing fish charm necklaces. Layer a plain charm necklace with another heavier one. And if done right, you may be even able to incorporate some corals and jewel pieces as well. Opt for the bracelets as well.

5. Long strap purses and bags- Store away big slouchy bags with short or medium straps. They are not gone forever, but are certainly not of the moment. For 2010, bags that strap across the shoulder are hot. Miniature bags blazed the runways but for those that have more to carry large structured ones are ok too. Check out some of the hottest trends below.

FEATURE: BARRELHOUSE NYC+CLOSET ENVI

Posted by urbanfeed On November - 25 - 2009

The Feature:Barrelhouse NYC + Closet Envi

What happens when fashion, individuality, creativity, and entrepreneurship, and fresh come together? The influence of fashion, art, and music is very prominent in the world today especially through the minds of innovators Ashani Allick and Tyler Elise.TUF’s fashion writer Aleia Woods finds out as she briefly gets to know the other side of two up and coming clothing lines based in NYC Barrelhouse NYC and Closet Envi through their recent showcase in Brooklyn, New York.

On Friday November 20, 2009 two young, innovative, and up and coming entrepreneurs of two clothing lines based in New York City, Ashani Allick and Tyler Elise with the help of Gena George held a music showcase to promote their new boutiques Barrelhouse NYC and Closet Envi all while displaying up-and-coming musical talents.

Upon arrival at the art gallery in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York where the event was held, guest were greeted by vintage accessories, and immediately I had to inquire, “Whose merchandise is this?” The individual guarding the heavenly items replied, “This is Closet Envi.” Of course my inquisitions did not stop there, I had to become more acquainted with those in charge of such an appealing and monumental event, considering these founders have yet to reach the age of 25!

After feeling inspired by the variety of musically and artistically inclined individuals whom performed, I finally got a chance to speak with Mr. BarrelHouse NYC himself founder Ashani Allick.

TUF: You had an artist showcase displaying music and poetic talents, but what exactly is BarrelHouse? And how did you develop the concept of BarrelHouse?

BH: “The idea of BarrelHouse came to me when deciding what I wanted to do with my life, and I took all the things I loved most, which is art, fashion, and music, and rolled it up into this one idea. Thus BarrelHouseNYC was born. By day, BarrelhouseNYC is a unisex fashion boutique which specializes in putting the most sought after street wear and vintage apparel at the customer’s fingertips; by night we provide the stage, both literally and figuratively, for artistic expression in all forms. We promote positivity within our community and creativity within the threads we create, as well as support. We are creative souls. We take pride in distancing ourselves from promoting a capitalistic society, and supporting a society of creative, risk-taking, daring to be different individuals. BarrelHouseNYC is the place where these youth can come together and express their talents to others in their community…& eventually the world.”

Now, on to the partnership of this event. The two females who have coined a phrase, Closet Envi, which is nonetheless true when describing a female’s opinion of another’s female’s closet, subconsciously! So get familiar with Closet Envi, and take a look at how our chat went.

TUF: How did you develop the concept of Closet Envi?

CE: “Well….we thought long and hard about it, for starters [shared laughter]. It’s actually a two-part concept; mainly because we offer everything! We have a website and we also have a boutique. We have everything, but underwear because we’re vintage and no one wants vintage panties [laughs]. We try to sell vintage that people will be jealous of because it is one of a kind. Closet Envi specializes in unique looks. We want to stock your closet and then everyone will want to envy you because everything is so dope!”
