Ballad of the Bizarre Fashion Show Lives up to the Name
Stylish, Breathtaking, and Bizarre are words that can be used to describe the highly anticipated Howard University Ballad of the Bizarre Fashion Show on Thursday October 22. Many eye catching pieces walked down the runway displaying fashions from some of the hottest up and coming designers.
Hundreds of people from the Howard University (HU) community flooded into Crampton Auditorium Thursday to witness the incredible runway ripping fashions of Demetri, Ox London, Muse by Malero, Karolyne Ashley, Durkl and Parish Nation.
The show opened with men’s wear which consisted of tight jeans and funky jackets. Tight and or fitted jeans have been seen a lot lately in the fashion world for men, so there was no surprise that this look was displayed at the show. The jackets were of all different kinds. Leather bombers, blazers, etc were matched with the almost skin tight jeans.
There was an evening wear collection showing off suits for men and elegant dresses for women. The pieces were very distinctive, showing an unusual take on the evening apparel look. The season appropriate colors used in this particular collection were of many greens, purples, and black. Many of the dresses were short showing a modern look to what evening wear is today straying away from long elaborate gowns. The designer experimented with different patterns for the men’s suites. Having pen stripes on the bottom with solid on the top and vice versa. Many of the suites were noticeably big, not fitting the models, which was very rare being that people are used to seeing clean cut, fitted suites strut the runways.
With the cold winter months approaching fast, the swimwear collection let everyone escape for a few moments while watching the colorful swimsuits and swim trunks walk down the runway. The swimsuits were mainly 2 pieces with beautiful, dazzling big necklaces that gave the illusion that they were attached to the suit giving a creative twist to the average swimsuit.
This event wasn’t called The Ballad of the Bizarre for nothing. As many witnessed just exactly how “bizarre” the clothing could really get with the Lady Gaga inspired looks that shocked many. Models came out with pieces similar to what the eccentric songstress would most likely be seen wearing at the next red carpet event. The dresses consisted of a lot of lace fabric of which covered the models entire body including their faces.
Although that collection was very different it did not top the jaw dropping collection that consisted of menswear with women’s clothing. The crowd became very confused when the very masculine male models came down the runway with tights, leggings, and jumper dresses on. Although the clothes may have been very stylish for women, I don’t know if the fashion world is embracing this particular look for men. Regardless, without a doubt it was the most unique collection of the night.
Just when the show was coming to a close there was one more model that snuck down the runway that of whom was Pooch Hall from the hit television show “The Game.” The crowd went crazy which concluded the glamorous, sold out event for the night.
The fashion show was compared by many attendees to that of the Ebony Fashion Fair shows. With the many themes, lights, and fashion forward pieces the show was definitely something to be raved about.
