THE RUNWAY: BALLAD OF THE BIZARRE

Posted by urbanfeed On October - 28 - 2009

Ballad of the Bizarre Fashion Show Lives up to the Name

Stylish, Breathtaking, and Bizarre are words that can be used to describe the highly anticipated Howard University Ballad of the Bizarre Fashion Show on Thursday October 22. Many eye catching pieces walked down the runway displaying fashions from some of the hottest up and coming designers.

Hundreds of people from the Howard University (HU) community flooded into Crampton Auditorium Thursday to witness the incredible runway ripping fashions of Demetri, Ox London, Muse by Malero, Karolyne Ashley, Durkl and Parish Nation.

The show opened with men’s wear which consisted of tight jeans and funky jackets. Tight and or fitted jeans have been seen a lot lately in the fashion world for men, so there was no surprise that this look was displayed at the show. The jackets were of all different kinds. Leather bombers, blazers, etc were matched with the almost skin tight jeans.

There was an evening wear collection showing off suits for men and elegant dresses for women. The pieces were very distinctive, showing an unusual take on the evening apparel look. The season appropriate colors used in this particular collection were of many greens, purples, and black. Many of the dresses were short showing a modern look to what evening wear is today straying away from long elaborate gowns. The designer experimented with different patterns for the men’s suites. Having pen stripes on the bottom with solid on the top and vice versa. Many of the suites were noticeably big, not fitting the models, which was very rare being that people are used to seeing clean cut, fitted suites strut the runways.

With the cold winter months approaching fast, the swimwear collection let everyone escape for a few moments while watching the colorful swimsuits and swim trunks walk down the runway. The swimsuits were mainly 2 pieces with beautiful, dazzling big necklaces that gave the illusion that they were attached to the suit giving a creative twist to the average swimsuit.

This event wasn’t called The Ballad of the Bizarre for nothing. As many witnessed just exactly how “bizarre” the clothing could really get with the Lady Gaga inspired looks that shocked many. Models came out with pieces similar to what the eccentric songstress would most likely be seen wearing at the next red carpet event. The dresses consisted of a lot of lace fabric of which covered the models entire body including their faces.

Although that collection was very different it did not top the jaw dropping collection that consisted of menswear with women’s clothing. The crowd became very confused when the very masculine male models came down the runway with tights, leggings, and jumper dresses on. Although the clothes may have been very stylish for women, I don’t know if the fashion world is embracing this particular look for men. Regardless, without a doubt it was the most unique collection of the night.

Just when the show was coming to a close there was one more model that snuck down the runway that of whom was Pooch Hall from the hit television show “The Game.” The crowd went crazy which concluded the glamorous, sold out event for the night.

The fashion show was compared by many attendees to that of the Ebony Fashion Fair shows. With the many themes, lights, and fashion forward pieces the show was definitely something to be raved about.

THE CORNER: D.O.E.- Death of the EGO

Posted by urbanfeed On October - 28 - 2009

This is anti ego! Death of I’m so involved, death of the attitude, death of the know it all. La, da, da, da- Hey, hey, hey-Goodbye!

At which point did us as young college students get so full of ourselves to the point where we not only build up our own ego, but where we try to knock our other hardworking peers down…Still thinking? Yea, I don’t know either.I find it funny that the people with the least experience are the ones with the biggest egos. This could be because they need to feel secure about themselves or simply because it gives them a sense of entitlement. Even in Beyonce’s song “Ego” she touches on the fact that she “talks like this” cause she “can back it up” and whether or not you love Beyonce you have to admit that she’s on her grind. Somewhere down the line we forgot we needed to start at the rags and work ourselves up to the riches.

Are we already at the point so young in our lives where we think we can judge people based on their ethnicity, age and how they look just because we’ve had a couple of internships? What did we really do at these internships to the extent where we’re so full of ourselves? Did we build an empire like Diddy or a dynasty like Jay Z? No, reality is that we made copies, did research or got coffee all while having the chance to work on major projects from time to time.
Photobucket

The Ego is taking over and getting out of control to a point where we don’t even realize. Just because we’ve had a few internships doesn’t mean we know everything. No one ever does, that’s why you don’t see successful “one man” businesses. The Ego is directing hundreds to a new career field called hateration where they can aspire to be nothing but professional haters. Yeah, try putting that on your resume and see how far you will get. Although, I can’t say I wouldn’t hire you for motivational purposes.

Any success you have should be acknowledged but not to the extent where you try to put other people down or act like you’re superior to them. Don’t get me wrong If somebody asks me how I’ve been I will tell them, but no one needs to hear about what you’ve done every two minutes especially in situations where it’s irrelevant. It’s possible to be successful and humble so if you think you know a lot, spread the knowledge because you are replaceable in any industry.

In the short time I’ve been at Howard University I’ve seen “The Ego” not only walking around the campus but walking around any place in the District of Columbia that allows you to be apart of an organization, committee or internship program. The way they flood the bathrooms, the hallways, the classrooms and even the Punchout really makes me wonder, “Is the Ego the next big epidemic we as college students will face since the plague?” I hope not. That’s why I’m calling to action D.O.E.-Death of the Ego.

So, before you get defensive or offended and ask yourself “is she talking about me?” the answer is NO. This is not directed to anyone personally but if you have to ask yourself then maybe you should consider some D.O.E. La , da, da, da-Hey, hey, hey-Goodbye!

THE FASHION: JIMMY CHOO+HM

Posted by urbanfeed On October - 28 - 2009

With the economy having a major impact on the retail industry, many high in designers such as Vera Wang and Isaac Mizrahi have created more practical affordable lines. Jimmy Choo has now joined forces with clothing store H & M to follow in these designers footsteps.

Photobucket
Women all over the world crave a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. Everyone from Mariah Carey to Oprah Winfrey own at least one pair. Even the first lady Michelle Obama wore a pair of green Jimmy Choo pumps for the inauguration. The problem is the average woman doesn’t have the money that these mega stars do and are not able to afford this high end brand of shoes and accessories. With Jimmy Choo’s running from five hundred to a few thousand dollars, it is not realistic for everyone to just go out and buy five pairs or even one for that matter. Now that Jimmy Choo and H & M stores have collaborated to make a reasonably priced line women can look good without breaking the bank .Jimmy Choo for H & M will include a collection of shoes, bag, and accessories for both men and women. The collection is more than 50 percent less expensive than the prices of the original Jimmy Choo brand.
As one can only imagine, the collection is in very high demand. For this reason H & M stores have come up with a system of allowing only the first 160 people to shop the shoes and accessory section for jimmy choo for H & M. The 160 people who are there at the open of the store will receive bracelets allowing them to be in the designated area for the Jimmy Choo collection. After the first 2 hours, H& M will open the store for everyone to show the entire store.
Of course the line is only for a limited time so it is crucial to take advantage of the prices while they are available. The collection will be in stores November 14. Jimmy Choo for H & M will only be in select stores which are located in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. For more information on the H& M and Jimmy Choo collaboration visit www.hm.com/us/jimmychoo.
