REMINISCE: TLC

Posted by urbanfeed On November - 25 - 2009

Reminisce: TLC

So I creep yeah/just keep it on the down low/said nobody is supposed to know

Who can forget the female trio with the sexy dance moves and the even more tantalizing vocals of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes, and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas? In the ‘90s one of the hottest female groups TLC, took music to another level with controversial songs and a mix of pop, hip-hop, and R&B. The baggy- pants and condom-toting females took the music world by storm with hits such as “No Scrubs,” “Waterfalls,” and “Creep.”
Formed in 1991 TLC met in Atlanta, Georgia, when Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas, met Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes after Lopes’ split from another all female group. Soon after, the girls were introduced producer to Dallas Austin who would later be partly responsible for their hit singles and former R&B singer of the ‘80s Pebbles, who later on became their manager. After getting a deal with LaFace Records they released their fist album Ooooooohhh…On the TLC Tip February 1992. Songs such as “Ain’t Too Proud Too Beg” and “Baby-Baby-Baby” quickly rose to the top ten of the Hot 100 and Hip Hop/R&B Charts on Billboard and captured the attention of millions worldwide.

However, it was in 1994 a more mature TLC released CrazySexyCool—a more grown and sexy version of their previous album. Selling over 11 million copies with “Red Light Special,” “Waterfalls,” and “Creep” being among their many hits CrazySexyCool provide the dynamic balance between sexual encounters and experiences with “Creep” and personal responsibility and consequences with “Waterfalls.” Of course along with success follows drama. Before the release of CrazySexyCool, Lopes made headlines for being arrested on arson charges. In an alcohol-fueled rage she proceeded to burn down the mansion of NFL wide receiver Andre Rison. Lopes’ lawyers helped her to avoid jail time by claiming that she was an alcoholic, and instead she spent 5 years on probation. This incident; however, did not stop the album from winning the 1993 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

TLC – Creep

SUPERNOVA | MySpace Video

After filing for bankruptcy in 1995 TLC disappeared for a while only to reappear in 1999 with another chart topping album titled Fanmail. Fanmail did not disappoint their fans that patiently waited for their return. This time TLC came back with a vengeance. “No Scrubs” was blasted in every car by males and females alike, and “Unpretty” became the theme song of all women who were tired of living by the American standards. While Fanmail proved that TLC had not lost their musical touch, tragedy struck once again in the lives of the three women when in 2002 Lopes was killed in a car accident in Honduras.

Despite all that the trials and tribulations TLC endured, it was obvious that they had a great influence over the music world. No other female group had teenagers walking around with baggy pants and condoms over their eyes. No other female group had females AND males singing songs about how “no good” men were. And no other female group could capture the essence of sex without looking raunchy the way TLC did. And that is why we love them.

FASHION 101: THE MUST HAVES

Posted by urbanfeed On November - 25 - 2009

Fashion 101: Beauty Must Haves

FIVE EYE PLEASERS

Noticeably, the leaves on the trees have changed from a dark green to florescent yellows, oranges, or reds. The evenings are no longer warm, and comfortable; lastly, the skies are grey by snack time. These changes imply that the seasons are switching positions. It’s time to say bye to Fall and welcome in the Winter, and of course we cannot welcome a new season without including the Beauty Must Haves, along with Beauty Dos and Don’ts of the Winter season, so strap on for this informative, yet luminous ride!

Although it’s winter, your make-up does not have to be dim and grim as a reflection of this season. For an everyday look, glamorous, yet professional, a thin line of black eyeliner curving the line at the corner of the eye is your best bet. Preferably, Carbon Black Telescopic Precision Liquid Eyeliner by L’Oreal. This eyeliner is perfect for shaping and enhancing any eye shape, and doesn’t smear. What makes this product even better is that it can be purchased for about $11.00!

Stepping away from the office, into the weekend, which more than likely includes shopping and hanging out would be more lenient to one’s eye decorations. Another eye shaper, without eyeliner, would be placing eye shadow in the inner corners of one’s eyes, whether it’s a teal blue, or even a silver-like grey! Weekends suggest the week has ended, so let’s be free with our eye decorations and for this, the best way to go is Ultimate Blockbuster Eye shadow Palette by Sephora. Now don’t allow the high end make-up brand frighten you. This is a purchase that will be well worth it and last you many seasons. Retail is $48.00, but it will make you 48 times happier than before you had this multi-purposed eye shadow pallet.

It is very common for the smokey eye to come out of the make up drawer in the evening for social or clubbing events. Smokey eyes are usually done with blacks, navy blues, dark greens or charcoals, of which these colors are all in the pallet listed above! So as you can see, we’ve covered makeup for Sunday through Saturday; time for some make up tip dos and don’t!

DOs
Accompanying any eye decoration, always apply mascara, preferably one that lengthens and adds volume. Brands such a L’Oreal and Maybelline carry both types of mascaras, averaging about $5 to $6 a bottle.

Be sure when doing either eyeliner, or any type of minimal eye decorations, it is complimentary to highlight the lower brow with either gold or a bronze eye shadow. Apply with a very thin brush, and use the fluff brush to soften color. With mascara, it is helpful to keep q-tips around to clean up the excess mascara that may get on the eyelid. Just dampen the q-tip with a little water, and you’re set!

Next, applying eye shadow in the inner corner of the eye! This application is best done with the sponge-like make-up applicator, not a brush, so you can get more color on the eye. Apply as if you are drawing a right triangle, and once again, the q-tips will assist in any mess made, including eye shadow that may get on the face from application. For best result and longer lasting eye shadow looks, apply concealer on the eyelid, as well as the lower brow area.

DON’Ts
A few don’ts to keep in mind, when applying dark eye shadow, don’t use eyeliner; it is not necessary. Don’t mix extremely contrasting colors; try to match colors that will blend. Stand clear of lipstick, to complete the look, light pink, or nude color lip glosses does the trick!

TOP SIX NAIL SPLASHES
It is common for females to just polish their nails with a dash of clear or the oh too common, black & white, so step away from the “typicalities” (yes, I said typicalities) of life, and add some splash to those phalanges. All polishes can be found at your local drug store! The nail splashes for the season below:

212 [metallic brown] by Sephora [Opi]-$9.00
Bright Tights [orange] by Essie-$8.00
One Night Stand [red] by Orly-$6.49
Mint Candy Apple [light green] by Essie-$8.00
Spiced Latte [nude] by Maybelline-$3.29
Dating a Royal [navy blue] by Opi-$8.00.

FEATURE: BARRELHOUSE NYC+CLOSET ENVI

Posted by urbanfeed On November - 25 - 2009

The Feature:Barrelhouse NYC + Closet Envi

What happens when fashion, individuality, creativity, and entrepreneurship, and fresh come together? The influence of fashion, art, and music is very prominent in the world today especially through the minds of innovators Ashani Allick and Tyler Elise.TUF’s fashion writer Aleia Woods finds out as she briefly gets to know the other side of two up and coming clothing lines based in NYC Barrelhouse NYC and Closet Envi through their recent showcase in Brooklyn, New York.

On Friday November 20, 2009 two young, innovative, and up and coming entrepreneurs of two clothing lines based in New York City, Ashani Allick and Tyler Elise with the help of Gena George held a music showcase to promote their new boutiques Barrelhouse NYC and Closet Envi all while displaying up-and-coming musical talents.

Upon arrival at the art gallery in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York where the event was held, guest were greeted by vintage accessories, and immediately I had to inquire, “Whose merchandise is this?” The individual guarding the heavenly items replied, “This is Closet Envi.” Of course my inquisitions did not stop there, I had to become more acquainted with those in charge of such an appealing and monumental event, considering these founders have yet to reach the age of 25!

After feeling inspired by the variety of musically and artistically inclined individuals whom performed, I finally got a chance to speak with Mr. BarrelHouse NYC himself founder Ashani Allick.

TUF: You had an artist showcase displaying music and poetic talents, but what exactly is BarrelHouse? And how did you develop the concept of BarrelHouse?

BH: “The idea of BarrelHouse came to me when deciding what I wanted to do with my life, and I took all the things I loved most, which is art, fashion, and music, and rolled it up into this one idea. Thus BarrelHouseNYC was born. By day, BarrelhouseNYC is a unisex fashion boutique which specializes in putting the most sought after street wear and vintage apparel at the customer’s fingertips; by night we provide the stage, both literally and figuratively, for artistic expression in all forms. We promote positivity within our community and creativity within the threads we create, as well as support. We are creative souls. We take pride in distancing ourselves from promoting a capitalistic society, and supporting a society of creative, risk-taking, daring to be different individuals. BarrelHouseNYC is the place where these youth can come together and express their talents to others in their community…& eventually the world.”

Now, on to the partnership of this event. The two females who have coined a phrase, Closet Envi, which is nonetheless true when describing a female’s opinion of another’s female’s closet, subconsciously! So get familiar with Closet Envi, and take a look at how our chat went.

TUF: How did you develop the concept of Closet Envi?

CE: “Well….we thought long and hard about it, for starters [shared laughter]. It’s actually a two-part concept; mainly because we offer everything! We have a website and we also have a boutique. We have everything, but underwear because we’re vintage and no one wants vintage panties [laughs]. We try to sell vintage that people will be jealous of because it is one of a kind. Closet Envi specializes in unique looks. We want to stock your closet and then everyone will want to envy you because everything is so dope!”
